A worked example

Worked example: financing a $65,000 work ute over 5 years at an illustrative 8.99% a year, the repayment is about $1,349 a month. Total repaid is about $80,939, of which $15,939 is interest. Many tradies choose a balloon to lower the repayment on a ute they plan to upgrade in a few years. Use the balloon box above to see the trade-off.

What affects your ute finance repayments?

Four things move the number: the amount financed (price less any deposit), the interest rate, the term and any balloon left to pay at the end. A longer term and a balloon both reduce the repayment, but they usually increase the total interest you pay over the life of the loan.

New vs used utes

Lenders price new and used utes differently. Rates on newer utes are often lower, and older utes may mean a shorter maximum term. Private sales can usually be financed too. The rate used in this calculator is an indicative example only.

Business use and tax

If the ute is used for business, interest and depreciation may be deductible, but private use usually means only the business portion can be claimed, and GST treatment depends on how the finance is structured. Confirm the detail with your accountant.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the repayment on a $65,000 ute?

On an illustrative 8.99% over 5 years with no deposit or balloon, the repayment on a $65,000 ute is about $1,349 a month. Your actual figure depends on your credit profile, the vehicle and the lender.

Can I get ute finance with no deposit?

Often, yes. Many lenders will finance up to 100% of a business ute, subject to approval. A deposit can reduce your repayment and may help with pricing.

Should I add a balloon to my ute finance?

A balloon lowers the regular repayment but leaves a lump sum due at the end, and total interest is usually higher. It can suit someone who plans to sell or refinance the ute at the end of the term. Nick can talk through whether it fits your cashflow.

Are weekly or fortnightly repayments cheaper?

The rate does not change, but paying more often can shave a little interest because the balance reduces sooner. Most NZ asset finance is quoted monthly; ask your lender what frequencies they offer.
