A worked example

Worked example: financing a $180,000 truck with a 20% balloon ($36,000 due at the end) over 5 years at an illustrative 8.99% a year, the repayment is about $3,258 a month. Total repaid (including the balloon) is about $231,492, of which $51,492 is interest. Trucks keep their value well, so a balloon of 20% or more is common on heavy vehicles. The comparison panel above shows what the balloon saves each period and the extra interest it adds.

How truck finance repayments are worked out

The repayment is based on the amount financed, the rate, the term and any balloon. Because trucks are higher-value assets, small changes in rate or balloon make a large difference to the monthly figure.

Could you qualify?

Lenders typically look at your trading history, the type and age of the truck, and how the repayment fits your income. New operators with a signed contract or letter of intent can sometimes be financed without a long trading record. See our guide to financing a first truck.

Tax and Investment Boost

Eligible new business assets may qualify for Inland Revenue’s Investment Boost: an extra deduction of 20% of the asset’s cost, for assets first available for use on or after 22 May 2025, with normal depreciation then claimed on the remaining 80%. It mainly brings deductions forward, and second-hand assets sourced within New Zealand are excluded. Whether your truck qualifies depends on your situation, so confirm with your accountant. See Investment Boost explained.

Frequently asked questions

How much are repayments on a $180,000 truck?

On an illustrative 8.99% over 5 years with a 20% balloon, a $180,000 truck is about $3,258 a month. Without the balloon it would be higher. Actual pricing depends on your profile and the lender.

Can I finance a used truck?

Yes. Used trucks can be financed, though age and kilometres or hours can affect the maximum term and rate. Private sales are possible too.

How much deposit do I need for a truck?

It varies by lender and your profile. Some approvals need no deposit; a deposit or a balloon can help bring the repayment down.

Can a new transport business get truck finance?

It is possible. A signed contract or letter of intent can support an application where there is no trading history. Each lender assesses this differently.

What is a balloon payment on a truck?

A balloon is a lump sum due at the end of the term. It lowers your regular repayments but increases the total interest paid. You can pay it out, refinance it or sell the truck.
