How equipment finance repayments are calculated

The calculation uses the amount financed, the rate, the term and any balloon. The same asset can be priced differently depending on its type, age and whether it is new or used.

Matching the term to the asset

Lenders usually keep the term within the useful life of the equipment. Specialist or fast-depreciating gear may attract a shorter term or a higher rate than something with a strong resale market.

Tax treatment

Business equipment may be depreciated, and eligible new equipment may also qualify for Investment Boost, an extra 20% deduction on assets first available for use on or after 22 May 2025 (normal depreciation then applies to the remaining 80%; second-hand assets sourced within New Zealand are excluded). GST and tax treatment depend on how the finance is structured, so check with your accountant. See our guide on finance lease vs term loan.

Frequently asked questions

How much are repayments on $85,000 of equipment?

On an illustrative 8.99% over 5 years with no deposit or balloon, $85,000 of equipment is about $1,764 a month. Your actual figure depends on the asset, your profile and the lender.

What equipment can be financed?

Most business equipment: construction and earthmoving, kitchen and hospitality, medical, gym, warehouse and more. New and used are both possible.

Can I include installation or freight?

Often yes, where it is part of the supplier invoice. Confirm with Nick before you order.

Do I need a deposit?

Not always. Some approvals fund the full cost; a deposit or balloon can reduce your repayment.

Chattel mortgage, hire purchase or finance lease?

These are different structures with different ownership and tax treatment. The right one depends on your business, so it is worth discussing with your accountant and with Nick.
